The Book: A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
The Rating: 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fall in love, break the curse.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
I don’t know about you lovely people, but I’m always on board for a retelling. Especially when it’s a retelling of my absolute favourite fairy tale – Beauty and the Beast. I first heard of this book while talking to some friends at YALC, so it’s been on my radar for a while. I was so happy to get my hands on a copy, and can honestly say this has become one of my all time favourite retellings!
Before ‘A Curse So Dark And Lonely’, I hadn’t read any of Brigid Kemmerer’s books, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. But now you can absolutely sign me up for everything she writes! Right from page one, the story was so gripping, and the main characters of Harper, Rhen and Grey were really well written and completely engaging. If I hadn’t had to go to work, you can bet I’d have read this book in one sitting.
I really enjoyed the twist that Brigid put in at the beginning as well, taking a normal girl from our world and taking her to a new and fantastical world where magic and monsters are real. Let’s be honest, we all want to be whisked off to a magical world, right?!
Harper is a heroine that you can really root for. She’s a bit scared, and a bit stubborn, and really street smart. She’s had a rough life but she doesn’t let that get in her way or hold her back. She’s unflinchingly loyal and completely devoted to her family (a trait which I both share and admire) and I loved reading her chapters and getting to know her character.
Then you have Rhen and Grey – the prince and the captain of the guard, who are both swoon-worthy in their own rights! I won’t share too much about these gorgeous boys, as I want you to have the joy of falling for them the same way that I did, but suffice to say that they are wonderful, wonderful characters!
Add to this a fantastic cast of supporting characters, an evil fairy who I simultaneously want to slap and hug and an incredible ending which only made me want to read more, and you can bet that this book shot right into my top 5 reads of 2018!
I can’t wait for all of you to get a chance to read this book. Let me know if you’re going to be getting a copy for your own shelves!
